Engineering an Empire part 2

This video sheds light on the tyranny of Shi Huangdi and also the beginning stages and horrors of the Great Wall. The great wall was and is one of the most amazing examples of human architecture. However it was not built without a cost. Over a million people worked on this wall; without pay and working in fear for their life. It is a sad and terrifying thought that this was quite literally back breaking labor. And the thought that this wall was built with not only stones but also the bones and bodies of people makes the fact that it can be seen from space more a grim spectacle as opposed to a grand one. This cruelty with which Shi Huangdi made a name for himself was also luckily the downfall of his power. The oppression of people could only go so far before they would fight back. And I believe that he knew this, hence his paranoia and the building of his grand tomb. A man who plans his tomb at the age of 13 is not a man who plans to win people over or a man who thinks little of himself. This giant tomb and the terracotta soldiers are a small window into the mindset of the first emperor of China and the man behind the unity and great wall of the Chinese Empire.
